Charlotte Live Music Preview for December 2018

moe. | The Fillmore | Wed 12/5

Moe.’s success for nearly 30 years is due, in part, to their “tour first” business model. While other bands struggle to find new revenue streams in a streaming world, moe. — like their peers in Phish and the Grateful Dead — have always relied on concerts rather than album sales.

The quintet has grown closer over the past few years after receiving the unfortunate news that bassist Rob Derhak had a nasopharyngeal cancer diagnosis in early 2017.

Derhak received immediate treatment and by last November was declared cancer free.

Their music is clever, melodic, refined, filled with “ferocious guitar riffs” and “intricate rhythms” — Relix

That renewed energy will be on full display Wednesday night at the Fillmore as the jam scene stalwarts continue their winter run into 2019.

Yarn w/Coddle Creek | The Visulite Theatre | Fri 12/7

The Brooklyn based Americana rockers Yarn will be in Charlotte in support of their 6th studio album This Is The Year.

“This is our best album yet,” bassist Rick Bugel adds. “This is also the happiest the band’s ever been. The chemistry we shared in the studio and on the stage is nothing short of amazing.”

That’s certainly no small accomplishment, especially for a band that spent two years honing their chops during a Monday night residency at the famed Kenny’s Castaway in New York’s Greenwich Village.

In an era of click-bait and sound bites, Yarn provides a real experience.  They’re not just a live band, they’re a band for people who want to live.  They’ll be supported by local jamgrass favorites Coddle Creek.

Jeff Austin Band w/AKITA | The Rabbit Hole | Sat 12/8

Jeff Austin is an unstoppable force.  He is celebrated for his fleet fingers and penchant for improvisation on stage, but those qualities also speak volumes about how he chooses to live.  This charismatic band leader is a hard driving player and fans will often find him playing in a possessed-like state on stage because he is so focused on dialing in his groove while playing.

Jeff Austin, who notes Waylon Jennings, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, and Phish has his early musical influences, is a mandolinist and singer best known for being a part of the Yonder Mountain String Band.

From a vocal standpoint, Austin cites “When I’m writing a song, it’s not about the hot licks, it’s about the voice and how it can be showcased from song to song”

His focus is on transporting his audience by way of vocal.

His current band hits Charlotte in the midst of a winter run that takes them through the South and Midwest.  The band finally closes things out in February and March at the revered WinterWonderGrass Music and Brew Festival in Colorado and Tahoe respectively.

Charlotte based funk act AKITA will be in support.

The Hip Abduction w/Little Bird | The Visulite Theatre | Thur 12/13

The Hip Abduction have been hitting the pavement hard over the past few years and that dedication is starting to payoff.

From 2015 – 2017 The Hip Abduction made stops at Sweetwater 420, FloydFest, Suwanee Halloween, Summercamp and Electric Forest Music Festivals.

They also made their Red Rocks debut opening for Twiddle this past May.  Not a bad run considering they played to a packed out Evening Muse in June 2014.

The Hip Abduction is a Florida-based 7-piece band that mixes African traditions, rock, and reggae undertones to create their own unique sound. With heavy emphasis placed on dub-reggae-inspired bass lines, funky afro beat percussion, and a 2 piece horn section, concerts never fail to turn into a nonstop dance party.

AKITA Presents Culture Shift III w/Menastree and Cosmic Shift | Snug Harbor | Sat 12/15

The brainchild of AKITA co-founder Patrick Buckley, Culture Shift III picks up right where I and II left off.

Culture Shift is an ever evolving party showcasing the best of local and regional bands and artists within the Funk, Hip-Hop, Jam band, Reggae and Soul genres.

If their Culture Shift II show this past July at the Rabbit Hole was any indication of the future success of their event, expect a packed house this time around at Snug Harbor.

“Culture Shift 3 will be our 1st one with an out of town act on the bill, Cosmic Shift, of Nashville. The eventual goal is for Culture Shift to become an annual or semi-annual festival, so this 3rd one lines up with our goal of starting to bring more regional talent to the event” — Patrick Buckley

Culture Shift III will be the first Christmas Edition for the band.  Expect a live Santa in the building along with a 6 foot Nutcracker!

AKITA will be supported by local jazz/funk ensemble Menastree and jam band Cosmic Shift out of Nashville.

Stay tuned because Records On The Wall will be giving away five pairs of tickets to Culture Shift III over the coming weeks.

A Very Grateful Christmas w/Jamorah, Jerry’s Kids (feat. Josh Daniel and Keith Allen) and Coddle Creek | Triple C Barrel Room | Sat-Sun 12/22-23

A Very Grateful Christmas is back for the 5th installment and will take place at the Triple C Barrel Room.  The family friendly 2-day  event will also include a number of vendors spread throughout the barrel room.  The event is geared toward the regional Dead Head set and Scott Grether of Velvet Productions certainly hopes he has another stellar turnout.

“The first year was at the Chop Shop so I am very excited to bring it from The Rabbit Hole to the bigger Barrel Room at Triple C Brewery.  With what Josh Daniel, Laura Reynolds and I have put together in the previous years and now teaming up with Triple C, will be like Macho Man Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan teaming up.  We are taking this event into the stratosphere, man!” — Scott Grether of Velvet Productions

Local jam favorites Jamorah along with Jerry’s Kids (featuring prominent local musician Josh Daniel and Keith Allen) round out the Saturday lineup.  Sunday will feature high energy creekgrass from Coddle Creek with Jerry’s Kids finishing the weekend off.
