5 Questions With Eggy

Connecticut-based jam-rock quartet Eggy are set to make their second appearance in Charlotte in five months, this time headlining the music room at Heist Barrel Arts on Friday night.

They recently opened for Spafford in October at The Neighborhood Theatre which found the band offer up a 3 song set, including a debut of the Grateful Dead tune “Just a Little Light” for the late Brent Mydlands birthday.

Eggy, composed of guitarist and vocalist Jake Brownstein, keyboardist Dani Battat, bassist Mike Goodman and drummer Alex Bailey, made the most of the recent pandemic by writing music and finding innovative ways to connect to their audience. The band wrote new music and performed live-streamed shows out of a recording studio that they built in their basement, affectionately called “The Egg Crate.”

When touring started back up, the band played a defining set at the 2021 Peach Music Festival and has since opened for jam scene staples Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Twiddle, Dopapod and Spafford.

Records On The Wall recently caught up with Eggy ahead of Fridays show. Tickets can be purchased here.

Records On The Wall: Did you learn anything from touring with Dopapod?

Eggy: Dopapod tour was certainly the enlightened experience. There’s always so much to take away from touring with another band. We are grateful for the opportunity to experience life on the road with those guys.

ROTW: What kind of effect did having to quarantine during covid have on your band?

Eggy: Our quarantine experience was much like you’d expect. A lot of time looking in and finding new ways to work through uncertainty. It was a blessing to all live together during that time. We discovered a lot about ourselves and dug deeper into our creativity. Like anything in life, you carry your experiences with you moving forward, so you try your best to make the most of what you have. We had to find peace within the unpredictable in order to move on and focus on what we can control. We wouldn’t be the band we are now without those lessons.

ROTW: How much do you love Bruce Hornsby?

Eggy: There’s no proper way to convey our love for Bruce Hornsby. Imagine shouting “I love Bruce Hornsby” from the highest mountain peak and hearing it echo through the valleys below. No, that wouldn’t even be enough.

ROTW: What’s on the horizon for Eggy?

Eggy: Lots of happenings in the Eggy universe. In the meantime, we’re looking forward to our 3-night Carolinas run at the beginning of March! Our good friend, Brad Goodall, will be opening up the first two nights. See you there!

ROTW: When will we see that pedal steel on stage?!

Eggy: The pedal steel has made a few appearances so far. Most notably at The Capitol Theatre this past November. It will continue to find its way into more of our music and on a stage near you.

ROTW: Ok word!
